Milligrams to grams shrinks the number; grams to milligrams grows it. Getting this backwards is the single most common conversion error.

Accuracy & assumptions
What these numbers assume
The tables assume nothing beyond the SI definitions themselves. Because 1 g = 1,000 mg exactly, a milligram-to-gram conversion involves no measurement, no tolerance and no substance-specific factor. Water, powder, metal and medicine all convert identically.
Figures are computed by shifting the decimal point in each value's exact representation rather than by floating-point multiplication, so none of the published numbers carries rounding drift. Converting any table row back the other way returns the original figure precisely.
What these tables do not tell you is anything about volume. A milligram is a unit of weight, not of liquid measure, and it cannot be converted to millilitres without knowing a substance's density. If a label lists both mg and ml, they are describing two different quantities.
Values in the microgram table reflect strengths typically seen on vitamin and supplement packaging. They are included because the microgram-to-milligram step is the same factor of 1,000, and mixing the two up misstates an amount by a thousandfold.

There are exactly 1,000 milligrams in 1 gram. This is a fixed SI definition, not an approximation or an estimate — it is the same in every country, for every substance, and it never varies with temperature, density or context.
