How do you convert grams to milligrams?

To convert grams to milligrams, multiply the number of grams by 1,000. There are exactly 1,000 milligrams in 1 gram, so 5 g × 1,000 = 5,000 mg and 0.5 g × 1,000 = 500 mg. The fastest mental method is to move the decimal point three places to the right, padding with zeros where there are not enough digits.

Overview

Converting grams into milligrams

Going from grams to milligrams is the direction people need when a figure is written in the larger unit but has to be compared against something written in the smaller one. A recipe or a specification gives grams; a label or a prescription gives milligrams. Converting makes them comparable.

The operation is a single multiplication by 1,000, and because that factor is an exact SI definition rather than a measurement, the result is exact too. Grams and milligrams are one rung apart on the metric ladder, and every rung is the same size.

The one thing to watch is direction. Milligrams are the smaller unit, so it takes more of them to describe the same mass — converting grams to milligrams must always make the number bigger. If your answer came out smaller, the decimal point moved the wrong way.

If you need the opposite direction, use the milligrams to grams calculator; for micrograms, the micrograms to grams calculator covers the rung below.

Benefits

Why use this converter

  • Instant, as you type

No submit step. Enter grams and the milligram figure is already there, updating on every keystroke.

  • Exact at any size

Multiplying 0.07 g by 1,000 gives exactly 70 mg here — not 70.00000000000001, which naive floating-point arithmetic produces.

  • Reversible in one click

Swap units flips to milligrams-to-grams and carries the current answer across as the new input.

  • Micrograms included

Grams to micrograms is the same operation applied twice — the chain panel shows all three units at once.

  • Nothing leaves your browser

The conversion is client-side JavaScript. No value you enter is transmitted, logged or stored.

  • Free with no account

Guide

How to convert grams to milligrams

  1. 1

Write the number with its decimal point

Every whole number has an invisible decimal point at the end. The number 5 is really 5. — seeing that point is what makes the next step obvious.

  2. 2

Move the point three places to the right

    5. becomes 5000. — five thousand milligrams. For 0.25 g, the point moves from 0.25 to 250., giving 250 mg.

  3. 3

Pad with zeros if you run out of digits

Moving the point past the end of the number means adding zeros: 2 g becomes 2,000 mg, and 0.5 g becomes 500 mg.

  4. 4

    Check the number got bigger

Grams to milligrams always increases the figure. If it shrank, the point moved the wrong way — redo it.

Multiply or move the point?

They are the same operation. Multiplying by 1,000 in base ten *is* moving the decimal point three places right — there is no separate arithmetic to do, which is why metric conversion can be done reliably in your head.

The same logic scales: grams to micrograms multiplies by 1,000,000, which is simply six places instead of three.

Examples

Worked examples

0.5 g = 500 mg

Half a gram. A prescription written as 0.5 g and a box printed 500 mg describe exactly the same amount.

2 g = 2,000 mg

The commonly quoted daily sodium reference. Two grams sounds tiny; two thousand milligrams sounds large. Same mass.

5 g = 5,000 mg

Roughly one level teaspoon of salt, and also the exact weight of a US nickel.

0.25 g = 250 mg

A quarter gram — a very common tablet strength, which is why it is almost always printed as 250 mg.

10 g = 10,000 mg

At this size milligrams stop being a useful unit; five digits is a good sign you should be using grams.

0.07 g = 70 mg

An awkward decimal that many calculators render as 70.00000000000001. Here it is exactly 70.

Accuracy

Why this conversion is exact

The factor of 1,000 between grams and milligrams is a definition in the International System of Units, not something anyone measured. It carries no tolerance and no uncertainty, and it is identical in every country and for every substance:

Because of that, converting grams to milligrams and back returns the original figure precisely, however many times you do it.

  • 1 gram = 1,000 milligrams
  • 1 gram = 1,000,000 micrograms
  • 1 kilogram = 1,000,000 milligrams

What the arithmetic does not tell you

This converter handles weight only. Grams cannot be converted into millilitres, teaspoons or cups without knowing the density of the specific substance — a gram of flour and a gram of honey occupy very different volumes.

It also cannot tell you whether a quantity is appropriate. If you are checking a medication figure, the conversion is exact but the decision belongs to a pharmacist, doctor or nurse.

Key details

Quick facts

  • 1 g = 1,000 mg exactly — an SI definition, not a measurement.
  • 0.5 g = 500 mg, 0.25 g = 250 mg, 0.1 g = 100 mg.
  • Converting grams to milligrams always makes the number larger.
  • Moving the decimal point three places right is the same as multiplying by 1,000.
  • 1 g also equals 1,000,000 micrograms — the same step applied twice.
  • Grams cannot be converted to millilitres without knowing the substance's density.

Relationships

Grams in context

A gram sits in the middle of the metric weight ladder. One rung down is the milligram at a thousandth of a gram; two rungs down is the microgram at a millionth. One rung up is the kilogram at a thousand grams.

Every rung is the same factor of 1,000, so the technique never changes — only how many times you apply it. Grams to milligrams is one step; grams to micrograms is two.

Applications

When you need grams to milligrams

  • Matching a prescription to a box

A prescription written in grams against packaging printed in milligrams. Convert first, compare second — then confirm with the pharmacy.

  • Reading nutrition panels

Panels list sugars in grams and sodium in milligrams. Converting the gram figures puts every row on one scale.

  • Homework and exam questions

“Convert 3.2 g to milligrams” is a standard question. The step list above is the method a mark scheme expects to see.

  • Laboratory specifications

Protocols often specify grams while balances read in milligrams. The conversion has to be exact, because at this scale rounding matters.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

Direct answers to the questions people ask about converting grams into milligrams.

Multiply the number of grams by 1,000. For example, 2 g × 1,000 = 2,000 mg. In your head, move the decimal point three places to the right and fill any gaps with zeros: 2. becomes 2000., which is 2,000 mg.

grams × 1,000 = milligrams

You divide. Milligrams are smaller than grams, so converting to grams must produce a smaller number — divide by 1,000. Going the other way, grams to milligrams, you multiply by 1,000. If your answer moved in the wrong direction, you used the wrong operation.

mg → g: divide by 1,000 · g → mg: multiply by 1,000

There are exactly 1,000 milligrams in 1 gram. This is a fixed SI definition, not an approximation or an estimate — it is the same in every country, for every substance, and it never varies with temperature, density or context.

1 g = 1,000 mg

There are 500 milligrams in 0.5 grams. Multiply 0.5 by 1,000, or move the decimal point three places to the right: 0.5 becomes 500. Half a gram and 500 mg are two ways of writing the same mass.

0.5 g × 1,000 = 500 mg

5 grams equals 5,000 milligrams. Multiply 5 by 1,000, or move the decimal point three places to the right and pad with zeros. For scale, 5 g is roughly one level teaspoon of salt.

5 g × 1,000 = 5,000 mg

200 grams equals 200,000 milligrams. Multiply 200 by 1,000 to get 200,000 mg. Because grams are the larger unit, converting to milligrams always produces a much bigger number — here, six figures.

200 g × 1,000 = 200,000 mg

Multiply the fraction by 1,000. Half a gram is 500 mg, a quarter gram is 250 mg, a tenth of a gram is 100 mg, and three quarters of a gram is 750 mg. Any decimal works the same way: 0.05 g × 1,000 = 50 mg.

A gram is bigger — 1,000 times bigger than a milligram. Whenever you convert milligrams into grams the number always gets smaller, and whenever you convert grams into milligrams the number always gets larger. That is a quick way to sanity-check any answer.

Use it to convert units, not to decide a dose. The arithmetic here is exact, but choosing or adjusting a dose depends on the patient, the product and the prescription. Always confirm any dose against the label and with a pharmacist, doctor or nurse.
